Paper and paperboard are strongly affected by their moisture content, BS EN 20187 and ISO 187 which changes according to relative humidity and temperature where they have been stored.
Before testing paper and paperboard, samples have to be conditioned inside an environmentally controlled laboratory with standard climatic conditions at 23 °C with 50% of R.H.%. Paper and paperboard samples have to be brought to thermohygrometric equilibrium for a period of 24/48 hours as expressed by the norm ISO 187 .
Here below are listed some of the tests that require the precision room air conditioning according to the norme:
- Technical compression and stacking tests on corrugated cardboard and cardboard boxes;
- Technical compression, flexure, rigidity tests on paper, board and corrugated board samples, small plastic containers, bottles;
- Short span compression strength tests on fluting and liner
- Tensile strength and stretch of samples of paper and cardboard according to the standard EN ISO 1924-2 for paper and cardboard and PrEN 12624-4 for tissue;
Paper and paperboard must be conditioned in compliance with Standard ISO 187:
Temperature: 23°C ± 1°C rH%: 50% ± 2%
Other parameters have to be considered for specific test methods:
Temperature: 21°C ± 1°C rH%: 65% ± 2%
Temperature (° C) and relative humidity (%) inside the laboratories must have a loop data acquisition system as e.g. a datalogger in order to keep records of laboratory conditions under control for Quality System and continuously within tolerance limits 24/24 hours.
Thermohygrometric probes must have a measure accuracy lower than prescribed and data must be saved for inspection and QMS as e.g. ISO/IEC 17025 .
