Laboratories for paper, paperboard and pulp testing
Physical and mechanical properties of paper and paperboard are strongly affected by their moisture content, BS EN 20187 and ISO 187 which varies according to R.H.% and temperature where the samples are placed.
Before carrying out testings on paper , pulp and paperboard in an environmentally controlled laboratory at 23 °C with 50% of R.H.%, the samples are prepared by bringing them to a thermohygrometric equilibrium condition for a period approximately 24/48 hours as indicated in the ISO 187 standard.
For example, in the Regulations for the use of the G.I.F.C.O. - Italian group of corrugated cardboard manufacturers in Chapter 2 the climatic conditions of reference are indicated as below:
The finished product must be conditioned according to the ISO 187 standard:
- 23°C ± 1°C for temperature
- 50% ± 2% for relative humidity
Following parameters have to be considered for different test methods:
- 21°C ± 1°C for temperature;
- 65% ± 2% for relative humidity;
Considering that the samples conditioning must be active for a period of time not less than four hours
In addition samples conditioning must be extended so that two consecutive weighings of the sample, carried out at intervals of time of at least one hour, show a difference in weight < 0,25% of their initial mass.
Temperature (° C) and relative humidity (%) inside the laboratory must be cyclically recorded by a datalogger in order to keep the environmental conditions under control and within the limits set by the current standard (e.g. ISO 187).
Thermohygrometric monitoring probes must have a measurement accuracy lower than the prescribed tolerances and data must be saved for inspection and QMS as e.g. ISO/IEC 17025 .
